2014 – Workout #27

Saturday workout, pretty small group like 8 of us.

Workout of the Day
Teams of 3 (we had four)

110 Dubs
100 Squats
90 Wall Balls 20/14
80 sit-ups
70 KB Swings
60 Burpees
50 Box Jumps 24/20
40 Pull-Ups
30 Toes To Bar
20 HSPU
10 Ring Dips
5 Bar Muscle Ups

Not to much to say about this workout.  There were some frustrating points and there was some good stuff too.  I worked pretty hard and I was able to help out some people that are new(ish) so that was good too.

We got through like 1.3 rounds of this in the 30 minutes.

2014 – Workout #9

Saturday Butt Camp

It was to be me and Mel, I think combined height of an average person at the gym.

I find it kind of odd that there possibly could be one workout with 4 movements that I am not great at any single one of them…  This would prove to be a humbling work out.

I had to lift Mel for each set of pull-ups, so I feel like that should count as a rep or two.  Because the instructions were no boxes, no matter what.  We asked and were denied.  We split the work on these pretty good.

I went lighter on the OHS, because I am not great at them and I really should work on them more.  But its one of those things when you get discouraged it makes it hard to get motivated to get after them. When I write that down it really makes me feel like it should be having the opposite effect…

Toes to bar we split up pretty good. I did them strict and did OK.

Double unders… Well Mel probably did 90 of these. She did like a 40 in a row that was pretty awesome.  Again something I need to work on.

2013 – Workout #91

Saturday morning with Pat at SISU

Warmup was an 800M run and then just some misc stuff to get ready.  Explanation and get right to it.

This was a good time working out with Andy and Jake.  I did pretty good at every station and the one I did the best at was pushups and squats.  I really attacked the 5 pushups every time. I felt great about that section.  I got over 90, I think if I was really pushing I could have gotten over 100.

2013 – Workout #78

Friday Night with Jason a SISU and another open wod.

Another round at the open WOD, after a some warmup I just dove right into this one.

Workout of the Day
CrossFit Games Open 13.4
Complete as many reps as possible in 7 minutes following the rep scheme below:
3 Clean and jerk (135/95 lbs)
3 Toes-to-bar
6 Clean and jerk (135/95 lbs)
6 Toes-to-bar
9 Clean and jerk (135/95 lbs)
9 Toes-to-bar
12 Clean and jerk (135/95 lbs)
12 Toes-to-bar
15 Clean and jerk (135/95 lbs)
15 Toes-to-bar
18 Clean and jerk (135/95 lbs)

*This is a timed workout. If you complete the round of 18, go on to 21. If you complete 21, go on to 24, etc.

My strategy this time was to drop the bar after each clean and jerk starting at the 6’s.  This was going to save my grip, after yesterdays run at this I knew that would be good.

I did good through the 3, 6, 9’s The 12s was the wall, it was a giant pain at that point.  But I was able to push through those and actually get to the 15’s.  Thats where it ended though with 5 toes to bars in the 15’s set.  Not to bad  I think.

Thursday night with Jason B at SISU

Death by anything is usually a bad deal… Tonight was no different with the burpee box jump.

For the warmup I decided to do 13.4.  I went into this pretty cold and just dove right in.  It was a pretty difficult one actually.  Should be fun to really give a go tomorrow.

We did some jerk stuff for the skills.  I didn’t go insanely heavy, just working on the form.  And I didn’t want to kill myself because I will be doing a lot of them tomorrow again.

Death by Burpee Box Jump

Death by – Every minute on the minute +1 for 15 minutes do something.  So first round its 1 second round its two, etc etc all the way to 15.  Once you can’t get a number you just start doing as many reps as you can with the time left.

Death by Burpee Box Jump…  Well the death by series always starts off pretty casual and ends with being awful.  Burpees would be no different.  They really start to add up in the later rounds.

I kept up really well until the 8’s then I really had to start working.  I got to 10 before the time ran out.  Started back at 12:00 and then did 7-9 every time.

2013 – Workout #60

Thursday night with Jason B at SISU

Warmup was pretty casual, i did do all 10 pull-ups without break, and if you know me you know they were strict. Squats felt pretty good.

Then we worked on snatch, which is nice because we are doing it for the open 13.1, so it will be nice to get a better feeling for this.  I worked at 75, then 95, then I did do a couple reps with 135, I am going to be doing those one at a time in the workout.  Those are actually pretty heavy for me.

I am feeling really good today and actually not tired, I dont’ know how that can be I am a lot of days in a row of workouts.  I did get a good amount of sleep and crushed some water all day today, I think more then a gallon.  My goal is 12 minutes.  This is just one of those wonderful days where the weights feel like feathers and I feel strong.

The first sets were rough, the 10’s and 9’s but I made it through them.  It wasn’t until the 8’s that I had to actually break up a set.  But at six and below everything was unbroken.

The sumo’s I am really working at getting my hips involved and you really can tell the difference when that occurs.

Tonight I felt really good about my box jumps and my rest.  I managed to keep moving, this workout was really good for that.  There wasn’t one thing that seemed so daunting that you just had to rest and mentally prepare.  By the time it was 3’s I felt like I had a full tank.  So I went pretty hard at finish, turns out I didn’t have a full tank and I was pretty tired.

I did get under my goal which is nice.  But looking forward if I could get the kip down on the toes to bar I could sub 10 this workout.

2013 – Workout #47

Wednesday night with Jason at SISU

The warmup was misrable we did some jump rope just regular and if you failed you had to do five overhead squats.  Well I dont’ know if it was that threat or not but I literally jumped rope without stopping for 3 minutes and my calves were feeling that….

Then we did some crab walks, sideways, backwards, forwards.  Then these turn over and sprint things, it went all bad for me.  I am REALLY bad at that stuff.  I think I my arms need to get more mobile and my ass smaller…  ugh.  It was bad.

Push Jerk 5 rep max – This should be fun…

So my ladder looked like this:

The last one of the 225 was pretty sketch, but I did feel I got control and finished up the rep.  I won’t like that was hard.  Especially since my form isn’t that great and I am pretty much muscling  it.  I really need to practice this at heavier weights because it forces me to move better.  I had better movements at the higher weights, but got tired faster too.

Well this shouldn’t be too bad because its only 7 minutes and my toes to bars and burpees are actually getting better if you can believe it.  I really was shooting for 7 rounds, I felt it was achievable.

Getting into the workout round four I rested, too long much too long.  I took over 1:45 to do that round. Mistake and goal would not be met because of it.  But I have to say I am really tired.  I am just trying to survive this instead of kill it.  And that is why my score is so low.

But I am happy I did five rounds of toes to bar unbroken!

2013 – Workout #39

Tuesdays with Jason at SISU

Warmups I got some double unders again!  Yes, if I can get these down I will feel pretty dam awesome about this tonight.

Gymnastic day!  After yesterdays barbell mayhem it will be nice.

Workout of the Day

I decided right away I am going to do the walk.  A lot of people were telling me to do it, I was a little worried but I was going to do it.

I surprised the hell out of myself many ways tonight.  My walks I actually did pretty good, I was constantly getting a few steps. One walk I did a solid like 15 feet, that felt awesome.  The toes to bar, I did good on, sets 1 and 2 I was getting sets of 10 before rest, and hopping right back up for me.  I dont’ have a kip down but I was doing well.  My squats felt good, everything about today felt good.

All in all a great night at the gym.  I felt strong, I was pumped with how well I did and I am really felling good about myself.

2013 – Workout #26

Wednesday Night at SISU

The warmup was actually kinda hard, it went Soldier Walk, inch worm, high knees, but kicks, and then some squat work and then we moved on.

The squat work is paying off, I am getting better at this.  I feel like I am starting to get in the right position, but years of doing it wrong sets in very quickly.

This is just one of those workouts that I am going to have to chip away at, I will not put up a monster time, in my head my goal is around 25:00 – 28:00 Minutes.  Thats giving me around 5 + minutes a round.  The 25 Wall Balls are going to add up and I am not strong on the bar.  I do not do box jumps for time or go very fast as I have read too many horror stories of injuries due to box jumps.  Maybe when I am thinner and my form is better.  Right now I step down.

This workout from the very start was straight up hard, by round 4 I am delerious with being tired, yet I go on.  I focus on making my reps be good, I am focused on form and you know what its paying off.  I am able to keep a decent pace and push pretty hard.  I think I actually could have done better on this workout, I just need to manage my energy a bit better.

This workout is what I needed though, something that I can’t complain too much about my form.  Too much about the weight or doing something “perfect”.  The closest thing to this is the toes to bar and lets be honest, get your toes to the bar – simple.  I’ve had a rough time in the past few days at the gym, and I needed to get real tired doing something well.

Workout of the Day

5 Min Max Double Unders (singles)
Over Head Squat
15 Bar Facing Burpees
Squat Clean
15 Toes to Bar
Back Squat
Match Double Unders (singles) from first five minutes.

All lifts require 2025lb for men 1425lb for women
Example @135 15 reps

So I suit up a bar at 135.  The reason for this is my overhead squats suck, I even went and practiced yesterday (good thing I did) and I still am just not good at it.  So my thoughts were all my reps are going to suck so I may as well do the one with the least amount of reps.

This turned out to be a very bad idea, the reps were crap, a solid 80% of them. By the time jason came around I was just finishing up and I had a med ball to get down but I was using it all wrong, I wasn’t deep enough it was all just bad.  VERY VERY VERY Bad.

I changed up the weight, went to 95 increased the reps and moved on.  I have to say that this was the single most frustrating workout I have done to date.  I leave the gym so dam discouraged I can’t even look at myself in the mirror.

So what is it that makes me so upset?  What is it that drives me to want to do these things right and the way they are supposed to be done?  Why do I keep putting myself through these movements that I am not good at?  What makes me keep coming back day after day after day?

I feel good about my burpees.  I feel great about my squat cleans.  The toes to bar were pretty solid. Backsquat felt like I’m actually getting better.  And my singles were more then I think i have done in years added together.  Whatever I sucked it up big time on this workout.
